History
In 1973, our founder Steve Herrell opened the original Steve’s Ice Cream in Somerville, near Boston Massachusetts. Steve revolutionizing the then stagnant ice cream industry by serving low air, highly flavored ice cream and pioneered the renaissance of the homemade, fresh, “gourmet” ice cream trade! Steve mechanically altered the motor on a small batch freezer to create an extraordinary rich, creamy, low-air, ice cream, mimicking ice creams made using a hand cranked freezer. He customized individuals’ servings for customers by grinding up popular cookies and candies (goodies) such as Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups®, Heath Bars® and Oreo’s® and at their request “Mix-in” to the ice cream (later called “Smoosh-ins®”at Herrell’s). Observing which combinations were the most popular, Steve’s began to incorporate the goodies directly into the ice cream at the time of manufacturing introducing the world to flavors like Cookies ‘n’ Cream and Heath Bar® Crunch, now classics staples in today’s ice cream industry.
After selling Steve’s, Steve opened Herrell’s Ice Cream in Northampton Massachusetts. Working with his partner Judy Herrell, Herrell’s expanded its offering of unique ice cream flavors as well as other innovations. Herrell’s introduced No-Moo® frozen dessert for dairy free customers in 1985 and the company now offers jarred hot fudge sauces, its own brand of hot chocolate mix and packaged real chocolate sprinkles.
Steve retired in 2014, handing the reins over to Judy, who continues the company’s legacy and dedication to creativity and the pursuit of excellence! Herrell’s Ice Cream today continues to be at the top for distinctive taste and customer loyalty.
