Where is the ice cream made?

Herrell’s® Ice Cream is made strictly in-house according to Herrell’s® formulas, procedures, and ingredients. We do not contract with any other company to make our ice cream.

Who created the recipes for Herrell’s® Ice Cream?

Recipes at Herrell’s® were originally created by Steve and/or Judy Herrell. Many others contributed to Herrell’s® recipe including managers, scoopers, ice cream makers/bakers and customers. 

Is Herrell’s® Ice Cream Kosher Certified?

Yes, Herrell’s Ice Cream has been kosher certified by Pioneer Kosher since 2016. 

What other products do you offer besides ice cream?

We make our own frozen yogurt with live culture, sorbet (dairy-free), and No-Moo® (non-dairy ice cream) and no sugar added ice creams. We also offer:

  • Custom-made ice cream cakes
  • Hand Dipped Waffle Ice Cream cones

Do you provide catering services for ice cream parties?

Yes! We have Herrell’s on the Moove, our self-contained trailer scoop shop for ice cream parties of 75 guests or more. We also offer self-service, self-pick-up party packs for parties under 75 servings. Contact: onthemoove@herrells.com for more information.

Does Herrell’s® offer educational opportunities?

Judy Herrell teaches The Science of Ice Cream making as part of a science curriculum for middle school classes. She also works with UMass Amherst teaching the Science of Ice Cream to Food Science students and judges UMass Amherst’s Ice Cream Making Competition yearly. Herrell’s makes the winning ice cream flavors and runners up. For more information contact Judy.

When and where was Herrell’s® founded?

Steve Herrell opened the first Herrell’s® Ice Cream in Thorne’s Marketplace in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1980. This store is still in operation today.

Is the Herrell’s® Ice Cream itself made from Steve Herrell’s original formulas, for which he gained his initial fame at his first ice cream store?

Herrell’s® Ice Cream’s (1980) recipes began by using the same flavors and methods Steve originated back in  1973. 

Is Steve Herrell currently involved with the business?

Not any longer. Steve Herrell retired in 2014, handing the reins over to Judy Herrell who works full time at Herrell’s® Ice Cream. Steve has used his retirement time to write a book about the ice cream business called Ice Cream and Me. 

Is Herrell’s® expanding?

Herrell’s® is not currently seeking new franchisees. However, Herrell’s will consider opening company stores in certain areas. Please contact Judy Herrell if you believe you have an area which would be a good location for a Herrell’s Ice Cream store.
